Marriage is (literally) good for the heart: study

Paris (AFP) - Even if marriage is sometimes more a bed of nails than roses, living into old age with a partner may help ward off heart disease and stroke, researchers said Tuesday. A sweeping survey of research conducted over the last two decades covering more than two million people aged 42 to 77 found that being hitched significantly reduced the risk of both maladies, they reported in the medical journal Heart. The study examined ethnically varied populations in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia, adding weight to the results. Compared to people living in spousal union, the [...]

Number of single moms in college doubled in 12 years, so why aren’t they graduating?

Report shines a light on additional racial inequities by MEREDITH KOLODNER September 20, 2017 The number of single mothers in college more than doubled between 2000 and 2012, but a minority of those mothers who enrolled actually graduated, according to a new report. More than two million single moms were college students in 2012 – close to one in five of all women in college. Are Children Raised With Absent Fathers Worse Off?

Isabel V. Sawhill - Tuesday, July 15, 2014 Courtesy of The Brookings Institution Why Kids Need Their Dads! URGENTLY NEEDED Conversations... Our culture values individual freedom about romantic choices and decisions to engage in sexual intimacy, but it's important to remember that such choices can affect future children's lives in profound ways. Many single parents would be the first to tell you how challenging it is to raise children without the support and partnership of the other parent. Most would want their children to avoid, if at all possible, the life of being a single parent themselves. Children raised by [...]

American Sexual Health Association: STI Statistics

STIs One in two sexually active persons will contract an STI by age 25. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 20 million new STIs occur every year in this country, half of those among young people aged 15–24. Even though young people account for half of new STI cases, a recent survey showed only about 12% were tested for STIs in the last year. CDC estimates that undiagnosed STIs cause 24,000 women to become infertile each year. The total estimated direct cost of STIs annually in the U.S. about $16 billion. HPV Researchers estimate that [...]

Harvey Weinstein Isn’t Unusual: Sexual Abuse and Trafficking in the United States

By Mary Rose Somarriba Courtesy of The Public Discourse The latest Harvey Weinstein allegation reminds us that, around the world and here in the United States, sex trafficking is closer than it appears. The domestic and international problem of sex trafficking has been getting attention more and more in the past few years, but for many Americans, it can still feel like a very distant problem. Many don’t know that the illegal and exploitative practice of sex trafficking has roots in many situations that are legal—in pornography, at strip clubs, and, as one of the latest Weinstein allegations suggests, even [...]

Negative Emotions Are Key to Well-Being

Feeling sad, mad, critical or otherwise awful? Surprise: negative emotions are essential for mental health. By Tori Rodriguez on May 1, 2013 https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/negative-emotions-key-well-being/ A client sits before me, seeking help untangling his relationship problems. As a psychotherapist, I strive to be warm, nonjudgmental and encouraging. I am a bit unsettled, then, when in the midst of describing his painful experiences, he says, “I'm sorry for being so negative.” A crucial goal of therapy is to learn to acknowledge and express a full range of emotions, and here was a client apologizing for doing just that. In my psychotherapy practice, many [...]

Premarital sex with one partner substantially increases the odds of divorce

Nicholas H. Wolfinger reported on the Institute of Family Studies website the relationship between the number of premarital partners and divorce, and the trends analyzed in the 1980's, 1990's, and 2000's all show the same trend: "Premarital sex with one partner substantially increases the odds of divorce." In fact, a look at the provided graph shows that just one premarital partner quadruples the chance for divorce in the 2000's data set, from 5% to approximately 20%, and two premarital partners sextuples the divorce rate, from 5% to 30%! Wolfinger does spend a significant amount of time theorizing as to why the highest [...]
